Online gaming can help identify problem gamblersJuly 26, 2007, 1:20 am (4 years ago)Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling, has said Congressman Barney Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act could provide an opportunity to combat compulsive gambling in the United States.
While the Council neither supports nor opposes Congressman Frank’s Bill, Whyte said it could theoretically be an opportunity to combat problem gambling as it would require licensed internet gambling operators to put protections in place to prevent compulsive gambling. Whyte, in an interview with the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative affirmed that in his opinion, there can be reached a better protection for the gamblers who use regulated websites. He admits that there is never a clear investigation and tracking of the immense crowd of people gambling nowadays in the US, but at least as the online gambling is concerned, following the fact that it uses account-based wageing, the clients can be indentified and even tracked accordingly. He added that collecting this information offers greater possibilities to enhance interventions to really assess in the direction gambling behaviour is going on. Existing technology and security controls have already proven to be effective in addressing compulsive gambling. Available safeguards include the ability to control the amount of money wagered, set limits on amounts deposited, restrict the duration that someone can play, identify and stop players whose gambling patterns seem out of the ordinary, and allow for consumers to be excluded from online gambling.
