Bwin, the European online betting giant, grabbed a key victory for the gambling industry after the Supreme Court passed its verdict in its favor after six consecutive years of legal combat with the federal government.
The brawl for the future of gambling in Germany started in September 2004 after Westlotto, the state lottery company which held a monopoly over the gambling industry took an injunction against Bwin to stop it from offering its services in the German market.
Things looked gloomy for Bwin after the Regional Court of Cologne gave its verdict against Bwin. However the decision at last was ruled by the Supreme court and now Bwin has the rights to offer its products in the German market.
Norbert Teufelberger, Bwin CEO said the victory means that the company can utilize their precious time that was previously wasted in courts and more time to "concentrate on developing modern regulations for online gaming in Germany."
