According to the report, Shanghai court has given verdict to 20 people for operating illegitimate online sports betting sites after the biggest online gambling raids in China. The chiefs of the illegitimate sports betting venture, Qian Baochun, got the heaviest punishment with the longest sentence, six years in prison and fines for producing the online gambling site. His 19 conspirators got lighter jail punishments. As said by Chinese authorities, the gambling site, which provided online betting on European football matches, was produced in time for the 2006 World Cup and has produced more than $1 billion in bet.
Gambling of any kind is against the law in China. Only the one authorized is the state-run lottery-style sports betting, which as well provides betting on football games. In the meantime, Macau, which is part of China, has turned out to be the world's biggest gambling region. China is also looking to permitting some figure of betting on horse racing, while the likelihood of complete horse racing betting is years away.
