Protection needed for Euro-Football
December 14, 2008, 7:18 am (2 years ago)Union of European Football Associations president Michel Platini looks at sports-betting as something which needed to be regulated further than how it is being regulated now. He expressed his concerns on Friday in Athens when he advised European officials to utilize the EU bloc-wide liberalization of gambling to guard football from illegitimate betting organizations, particularly those from Asia.
According to Agence France Presse, Platini explained to the Council of Europe "....my position is to acquaint with officials to grant us that official framework... for the moment; the rules are very business, rivalry-focused. We need to be able to impeach, but it's not for UEFA to see if it is the arbitrator, or players or club leaders," he explained. "UEFA has no authority, which is why I have told we require a European sports control."
Platini viewed that European sport has other difficulties, but the risk of betting was that the very spirit of sporting rivalry could be devastated.
