Internet Gambling Bill Signed by President BushOctober 15, 2006, 6:17 pm (5 years ago)Reports are surfacing that President Bush has signed the Port Security Bill, which has in turn set the wheels of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act firmly in motion.
On signing the bill, President Bush announced, 'We're going to protect our ports. We're going to defend this homeland, and we're going to win this war on terror.' However during his address, the President made no reference to the attached Internet gambling bill, which now signed, makes it illegal for online gaming companies to accept wagers from people inside the US. The decision by the Republican majority to attach the Internet gambling ban onto the unrelated bipartisan ports bill had drawn scathing criticism from some Democrats. The criminalization of online gaming in the US is set to have major repercussions across the global industry. Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance, a grassroots advocacy organization of more than 110,000 poker enthusiasts, made a swift response to the breaking news. “Today is a dark day for the great American game of poker. 23 million Americans who play the game online will effectively be denied the ability to enjoy this popular form of entertainment, even in the privacy of their own homes,” Bolcerek said. Obviously, 23 million Americans will think twice before they vote in the next general elections.
