Oxford University study focusing on internet gamblingJuly 31, 2007, 2:12 pm (4 years ago)A new study carried out by England’s Oxford University promises to provide a unique insight into online gambling patterns.
As much controversy continues to surround the whole issue of internet gambling, the web-based survey by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), which is based at Oxford University, promises to shed light on the fast growing industry. The study is jointly funded by the British Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT). There has also been some report from the online gambling industry, with Remote Gambling Association (RGA) and the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) giving their backing. The survey, which will be completely anonymous, is available online at www.oxfordgamblingsurvey.org and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The support of the online gambling industry is illustrated by the fact that links to the questionnaire can also be found on a number of online poker sites, online casinos and sports betting services. An OII spokesperson appealed to both gamblers and non-gamblers to participate in the survey, adding that a wide range of respondents would only add to the success of the study. The website also states that it hopes the results of the study will allow it to help some people who have problems controlling their gambling online. To encourage participants, the Institute will give away six iPods in a draw from those who have completed the survey.
