In a recent meeting at the town’s main hall, citizens voted in favor of the casino. This new development is set to provide a major boost for the economy of the town, which has a population of 20,373. The town’s infrastructure is set to receive a $250 million investment, which a further $10 million a year after that. The economy will also benefit from the money of visitors attracted to the town by the casino. While there was some criticism that the deal didn’t benefit the town enough, most residents seemed happy with the agreement. Despite efforts by opponents to the casino to have the meeting banned, it went ahead and the casino got the nod with 2,387 voting for the casino, and 1,335 against. The vote is not an official go-ahead for the building of the $1 billion facility, but gives a clear indication to the Mashpee tribe that the have the backing of most of the townsfolk. The town, which was settled in 1660, is less than an hour’s drive from state capital Boston.
