Basketball player admits playing poker online but denies the illegalityNovember 17, 2008, 2:56 pm (4 years ago)There have been all kinds of stories and rumors going around regarding a star on the Florida basketball team being involved in online gambling. The university has examined the matter and has chosen to defend Nick Calathes as he has done nothing illegal.
The player already has declared that he has used the gambling site which was apparently online poker. He told that he has lost money by playing online poker but he does not admit or agree with the view that he violated the law or done anything wrong as a member of the basketball team. Head Coach Billy Donovan and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley have both come out strong guarding their player. "We examined everything very carefully and are content with our outcome. We have no eligibility matters and are very contented that this subject is solved based on our evaluation," explained Foley in an announcement previous to Florida's season opening game vs. Toledo. An NCAA spokesman stated that online poker gambling does not breach any NCAA regulations. The regulations are focused more on sports betting than any other form of gambling. The American government, however, is not so fast to acknowledge that online poker is officially permitted. They have passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and are now attempting to put that law into effect without defining what is legitimate and illegitimate online gambling
