EU changes gambling compliance
July 26, 2007, 12:29 am (4 years ago)The Eropean Commission has lately decided to take legal action over the restrictions regarding the sports gambling which were made in three EU member countries, France, Sweden and Greece. A final verdict will be given on June 27th, after being analyzed by the college of commissioners of the three EU members. Oliver Drewes, spokesman for the Executive sector of EU, stated that we have to wait until the specified date to find out the final decision, and that at the moment nothing is certain.
Until now, there have been EU formal requests for amending the laws in France and Sweden, laws which, Eu stated, don't agree with the european laws regarding gambling. This was the last procedure taken by the European Union in hopes of reaching an agreement, before referral to the European Court of Justice. In France, more and more CEOs of French Sports Betting Companies which are licensed in other EU member countries as well, have been warned with legal penalties and sanctions. The French laws affected sponsorship agreements in sporst like football, and the conditions for cycling races.
The three Member States of the European Union thought of it as necessary to impose these new requirements in order to prevent outside competition on the market of European gambling. The foreign companies hoping to challenge this market found themselves in a very difficult situation, mainly created by the state lotteries and gambling monopolies available in these countries.
The European Union justifies its attacks on its three members by its goal of protecting a freedom of movement for both goods and services in the EU zone. On the stated day, most decisions will be completed, and will affect much of the European Gambling market.
