Lotteriinspektionen, Sweden's Gaming Board has warned in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that it would be in contempt of court if it continued publishing advertisement for Expekt, Maltese gambling company. This strong warning came following a ruling that authorized penalties for foreign gambling advertisements from the Södermanland district court.
The Board could fine Aftonbladet a draconian 150 000 kronor for every foreign gambling advertisement published, the court confirmed last Thursday.
"One wonders how many convictions will be needed for the newspapers to stop publishing these advertisements", said chief legal advisor of the board, Håkan Hallstedt.
Meanwhile, an Aftonbladet spokesperson commented that it did not consider that it had done anything illegal. Now Aftonbladet is "going to read the judgment, and probably appeal, although a decision on that has not yet been taken." The paper has three weeks time period to appeal. After this 3 weeks time period, Gaming Board can impose fine on the Aftonbladet. Gambling companies in Sweden are strictly prohibited from promoting *non-authorized* gaming companies, according to Swedish Law.
