 March 11, 2007, 4:48 pm (4 years ago)

Three months were more than sufficient for Mumbai based player Pranav Bathija to be an expert in the game of Texas Hold‘em Poker. He ranked an admirable 3rd place at the India’s first professional poker tournament - Asian Poker Classic.

After wining, Pranav Bathija commented,” This win will do great things for poker in Asia… If I can learn poker in just four months and place third in an international poker tournament, then I’ve proven that it is very possible to be a successful poker player in India”.

Online poker website MaharajahClub.net was the place where he learned the game by playing for free. The website soon identified his talent and decided to sponsor him for the tournament.

Bathija won $1 million (44,490,085 Indian Rupees) in this tournament. He played with 143 contestants around the world. The tournament was held at the Intercontinental Grand Resort in Goa.

Pranav also said,” This is a serious tournament. I’m so happy to prove myself and to prove that Indians can compete in this sport on an international level”.

MaharajahClub.net sponsored 12 Indian players in the Asian Poker Classic. Three of them ranked amongst top 20. Shiv Puri, another Indian player won APC Event 1.

Sachin Pawa, CEO of MaharajahClub.net commented,” We are proud to support Indian poker players by giving them the opportunity to compete in a live poker tournament in their home country. So often Indian poker players have to travel to half way around the world to compete in a live poker tournament, bringing this great sport to India has given many more Indian poker players a chance to compete and win in a professional poker tournament that competes in prize money with the best tournaments in Las Vegas or Monte Carlo”.

Carl Hostrup (Denmark) was ranked 1st, Samual Lehtonen (Sweden) & Pranav Bathija (India) were second & third respectively.

Sol Poker (www.solpoker.in) is a fresh, professional poker room launched by young, energetic Professionals who have combined experience of 15 years in poker industry. Poker has been in Goa for 4 years and is pulling players from across India.

Having played at most poker rooms in Vegas, Macau, London and around the world, we thought of
bringing that experience to Goa; this is exactly what our poker room offers
Madhav Gupta (Maddy), COO.

The idea of Sol Poker was incepted a few years back, but its promoters waited till the time was right and they could leverage their experience of Poker of many years. Our Poker Room is named after “Sun”, or “Sol” in Latin-the star at the center of the Solar System. As Goa has positioned itself as a central Gaming and entertainment Destination, the Sol Poker room fulfils the gap in providing a world class poker facility in the heart of Goa, quoted Maddy.
Sol Poker is located in Casino Pride, one of the grandest and swankiest Casino in Goa.
Currently there are 2 poker rooms in Goa, and 100’s of players flock to them daily. Sol Poker plans to bring more poker players from all across India by launching various marketing policies, such as Rake free days and free tutorials on how to play Poker. “It’s not about just bringing players that are already in Goa to play poker -- the idea is to bring fresh new players who are very comfortable with there home games and there friends. Thus Sol poker will arrange a game at player requests with whatever blinds and format they feel comfortable says Maddy.
There are numerous poker tournament brands trying to make their mark in this industry such as IPS, IPC, Aces Unlimited and we are sure some of them will be as or more prestigious as a brand than WSOP, EPT, WPT in the years to come. “We have seen a 200 percent growth in players during our IPS tournaments in less than a year and massive following from them for our tourney calendar. We will do our best to maintain our motto of "We Have The Best Hand !!!". Bharat Agarwalla, Director IPS.
Poker has seen massive traction in the last few years, which has seen uprise of professional affiliates and bloogers such as POKERGURU and merchandizing companies such as The Shark and Poker Planet. India Inc. is realizing the importance of Poker (Which is No 2 most watched sports on TV in US) as many have tied up for media Content and exclusivity for India. Over last few Diwali home games, there are more and more Poker tables being set up," During last diwali all our 25 poker tables were on hire, sometimes twice a day" Pranav Bagai, CEO, The Shark. There are 2 sepcialized poker magzines, The Card Player and Bluff who have also made an entry into India during last 12 Months.
Looking at Poker as an industry in India, Sol Poker has set itself an objective “to become India’s top Poker destination!” Come on in’ We got a game for you.
