High Court Move by Leading Online Betting Company, Betfair
February 21, 2007, 2:05 pm (4 years ago)Betfair, a major company in online betting has filed a claim with the High Court of Australia. Recent introduction of a law that outlaws betting exchanges (similar to UIGEA act in USA) may be the reason behind.
According to the new law, bettors in Western Australian will face fines of up to AUS$10,000 or imprisonment for up to two years for having a flutter on betting exchanges. Hence operating and using betting exchange have become illegal. Andrew Twaits, Betfair's director of Corporate and Business Affairs commented,” The legislation effectively prevents Western Australian (WA) residents placing bets with Betfair and prevents betting exchanges operating in WA”.
Off-site gambling is offered by state regulated Totalisator Agency Boards (TAB) for forty years all over Australia. But, it is also assumed that Betfair & other similar sites may have adverse effect in the local racing industry.
