The future of British Columbiaґs online gambling
January 5, 2010, 1:16 pm (1 year ago)According to the Canadian Criminal Code, only local governments hold the authority to carry out Internet gambling, and the British Columbia government is being under pressure to carry out this authority in a non-exclusive way to make sure that Canadian customers are introduced with only highly regarded and secure Internet gambling venues.
During the 3rd quarter of 2009 the Interactive Gaming Council, a Vancouver-based trade association looking after the interests of major and trustworthy online gambling operators, was lobbying BC politicians to broaden government-limited online gambling to trustworthy private firms in a firmly regulated but worldwide system.
At the beginning of 2009 the British Columbia Lottery Corporation had revealed it would be including casino-style games including blackjack, roulette and poker to its PlayNow.com online lottery website.
At the time, John Kennedy FitzGerald, CEO of the Interactive Gaming Council commented, “Like the B.C. Government, the IGC recognizes there are online gaming companies that operate out of badly regulated jurisdictions. However, IGC members are licensed and firmly controlled in jurisdictions such as the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and Alderney, which are approved by the United Kingdom as having the top regulatory standards. Some of these jurisdictions have been involved with regulating online gaming for almost a decade."
