Poland’s gambling prohibition

The more-strict regulation aims to prohibit slot machines outside casinos and increase taxes for the business, the prime minister’s chancellery stated Tuesday. The draft law indicates that there is going to be no new authorizations issued to existing establishments with slot machines, whilst video lotteries are going to be prohibited. The situation on Internet gambling remained uncertain at press time.
The draft law now goes to parliament and the president, Lech Kaczynski, both of whom are anticipated to authorize it. The statement comes weeks following Tusk’s government being hit by a scandal in which a number of ministers were accused of lobbying for the gambling business.
Tusk insisted some ministers to leave the office in an action that was seen as an attempt to support his uncertain approval ratings ahead of next year’s presidential election, in which he is allegedly be a candidate. Critics say that the country requires long-term resolutions to deal with corruption in politics, and that Warsaw is concentrating on the gambling issue to turn attention away from government corruption.
