Online casino gambling becoming a threat to New Zealand
June 17, 2009, 6:14 am (2 years ago)New Zealand is losing a large amount of dollars to casino operators abroad, according to a new study that has been done by a Racing Board. The study shows that almost 200,000 New Zealanders are betting at online sites that are located outside of New Zealand.
The country is experiencing a comparable issue to the one occurring in the US. Foreign companies are getting the gambling money that should be kept inside the country. Their residents as well are not guarded since these online companies are not controlled in New Zealand.
"We are beginning to witness cases get through where parents are bringing in their kids who are spending up to 60 hours a week online," explained Problem Gambling Foundation spokesman David Coom, "We are just ready to get on on some study with youth to see what actually is happening."
What is taking place is that 177,000 New Zealanders are spending their time gambling online at sites based outside of the country. As indicated by the study, those gamblers are using $2.1 billion a year at these sites.
