Illinois attempts to stop online gambling from expanding regardless of possibility of increase in revenue
May 24, 2009, 10:39 am (2 years ago)The Illinois Senate declined gambling development that would have place casinos in Park City, Rockford and Chicago, as said by the Chicago Tribune. The development would have seen slot machines at Illinois racetracks and let the riverboats move inland and to be casinos s as well.
But the refusal was a head-head thing at 28 for and 28 against, and since authorization needs 30 votes in the 59 seat Senate it didn’t succeed to pass, but sponsor Terry Link saved his suggestion for a possible 2nd vote by using a technical technicality to eliminate the roll call.
Link stated the additional gambling would produce almost $100 million in the 1st year for the state and $500 million yearly once set up.
Senate President John Cullerton, a strong sponsor as well, attempted to convince member Senators to advocate the bill. “In a year like this when we are in need of money and no one wishes to vote for a tax increase, everybody says, ‘what about gaming?” he explained. “We need to consider this as an option.”
