Holistic Clinic for problem gambling
October 23, 2008, 7:40 am (3 years ago)The Toronto Globe and Mail reported this week about the movement of a latest holistic clinic distinctively made to care for teenagers addicted to gambling, the Internet and video games.
Clinicians at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto are also for the Adolescent Clinical Education Service, dubbed “ACES” by clinical head Bruce Ballon, which has been started since last month. The goal is to push adolescence addiction healing into the 21st century by recognizing that video games and the Internet have the possibility of being simply an additional get-away path for teenagers fighting mental health matters including social anxiety, depression or low self-esteem.
"We began receiving so much calls regarding Internet utilization and we became tired of telling, 'I’m sorry but we are not dealing with that at the moment,' "Dr. Ballon explained to the Globe and Mail. “As a replacement for that, we said, 'Why don’t we just get involved in this issue,' since it's simply a different demonstration or coping system or tactic to face the other problems."
“ACES” is managed by Dr. Ballon, a child psychiatric specialist, and Joanna Henderson, a psychologist and researcher, both working on the teenager addiction program at CAMH. The duo report that they are presently taking care of 8 patients on a regular basis and are getting an increasing number of referrals. The age of patients are from 16 up to 24, but Ballon want to start from teens as young as 14. The report does not show a breakdown of patients by addictive behavior via gambling, video-gaming etc.
