Resignation of Gonzales - What does it mean for Online Gambling?August 30, 2007, 5:18 am (4 years ago)United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has just announced his resignation. Being the number one opponent of the online gambling industry, Gonzales’ resignation sparks hopes in the industries top contenders.
Gonzales, who took office in February of 2005, announced on August 27th that he would resign from office on September 17, 2007. The resignation was not unexpected, especially in light of his testimony before Congress in April 2007, over the firing of US attorneys who were not abiding by GOP policy. In fact, in a complete twist of irony, some have gone so far as to bet on when the resignation would take place. President Bush has alleged that Gonzales has been treated unfairly by Congress, and although no official reason for the resignation has been given, Bush has blamed the unfair treatment for the act. Gonzales has lead the pack for stopping the online gambling world. He has vowed to bring about the demise of online gambling altogether. Under Gonzales’ direction, online gambling executives from the US have been arrested while passing through US airports. He is also one of the defendants in the complaint filed recently against the IMEGA. Online gambling officials certainly have a reason to celebrate Gonzales’ resignation. However, no one has speculated on who might be replacing him in September. Online gambling will have to wait to see if the replacement will be more lenient, or join in Gonzales’ effort to rid the online world of gambling.
