Gambling donation scandal in the UKAugust 29, 2007, 3:36 am (4 years ago)Prime Minister Gordon Brown has fast become the subject of many conversations in England of late. Leading the English Labour Party, Brown has reportedly received donations from Bet365, which is an online gambling operator. A donation of Ј100,000 was received on June 28th, the day after Brown took office. Another donation of Ј50,000 was received some time later.
Some two weeks before the donation was made, Brown and the Tories cancelled plans to construct a mega casino in Manchester. It was planned in accordance to the Las Vegas styles of casinos, and had planned to hold as many as 1,250 slot machines with unlimited jackpots. In April of this year, Tony Blair, also a Labour Party Prime Minister, received a donation in the amount of Ј50,000, also from Bet365. Blair was originally in charge of the plans for the mega casino. Accusations are stemming based on hypocrisy. Gordon Brown and the Tories are currently declaring the gambling industry, and all online casinos to be immoral. However, they are happily taking donations from that same industry. In light of the new bill currently being implement in the UK, this scandal could not come at a more ironic time. The UK is currently in the process of determining the best course of action to be taken where online gambling is concerned. They are trying to lead as an example to other countries in the regulation and enforcement of gambling acts. Questions have been raised as to the UK’s behavior in all that has taken place, especially during such a delicate time, as trying to regulate the online gambling industry.
