Mohawk Tribe demands decision on casino landAugust 7, 2007, 1:53 pm (4 years ago)Governor Spritzer and the St Regis Mohawk Tribe have asked to meet with Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to discuss an application by the tribe to acquire land for a casino.
The 29.31 acres area would be used for the proposed Catskills casino project. All requirements have now been met by the tribe which is waiting for a decision from Mr Kempthorne. The request for a meeting follows confirmation that the trust application was complete a number of months ago and the tribe is now keen to move the process forward as quickly as possible. The project has been well received by community, elected and union officials. A number of congressional and state leaders including Congressman Maurice Hinchey, State Senator John Bonacic, Senator Chuck Schumer and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther have all voiced their support for the project. Governor Spritzer insists that the project cannot be delayed any longer. He said the casino would bring many benefits to the Catskill region including increased tourism, the investment of millions of dollars and more than 3,000 new jobs. He urged Secretary Kempthorne to act immediately on the issue. Tribal chief Lorraine White said the tribe has been very patient and asked for a quick and fair. She said it was unfair that the project is being delayed. The Mohawk’s 600 million dollar Monticello casino project consists of a two storey casino with an entertainment complex. The casino will have 3,500 slot machines, about 125 table games and 24 poker tables.
