NZ government ups pressure on online gambling companyAugust 6, 2007, 3:48 pm (4 years ago)The government of New Zealand is cracking down on online gambling, according to reports this weekend.
Christchurch Casino has been ordered by the Internal Affairs Department to quit its online gambling activities within seven months, the Dominion Post reported this weekend. The move has echoes of the United States’ decision to outlaw gambling activity last year, a move that is still having major repercussions around the globe. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act outlawed payment by bank or credit card companies to internet casinos, poker rooms and other online gambling companies. The law is known to have hit online gaming companies hard – some depended on the US market for as much as 80 percent of their revenue. This has led to increased investment by gambling operators in Europe and other parts of the world. But now it looks as if New Zealand is to follow suit and ban online gambling activity there. Christhchurch Casino has two online casinos and specializes in poker and bingo. The gambling operator was informed a year ago that it was in breach of the country’s gambling laws. The Gambling Act, passed in 2003, outlawed companies other than TAB from accepting bets over the internet. Christchurch has received a letter telling it to stop activities, but has responded by telling the Internal Affairs Department that it is selling its online business. The buyer is unknown.
