Support grows for relaxation of US online gambling lawsJuly 28, 2007, 2:55 pm (5 years ago)Three more United States’ politicians have added their names to a growing list of supporters for proposed legislation that would pave the way for an online gambling industry there that is properly regulated and taxed, rather than simply banned.
Bill Hr 2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, was originally introduced by Congressman Barney Frank, Chairman of the influential House Financial Services Committee, and it could ensure the survival of internet gambling in the country. Neil Abercrombie, Lynn C Woolsey and Joe Baca are the latest names to be added to the quickly growing list – the Bill now has 35 sponsors. It only received 11 sponsors when it was first tabled in April. Earlier in the week, Steven Rothman, Michael Honda, Albert Russell Wynn, Anthony Weiner and Bennie Thompson joined the growing group of politicians who are getting behind the Bill. If it is accepted it will see the end of many of the restrictions of last October’s Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and pave the way for a legal internet gambling industry regulated by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Payments by financial institutions to internet casinos, poker rooms and other online gambling operations were outlawed by the UIGEA. Frank’s Bill is one of four that seek to relax the restrictions imposed by the UIGEA. The others are Congressman Robert Wexler's HR 2610, the Skill Games Protection Act; Congresswoman Shelley Berkley's H.R. 2410, which calls for a study of Internet Gaming; and Congressman McDermott's H.R. 2607, which amends HR 2610.
