FBI probes NBA referee over gambling allegations

 July 26, 2007, 1:33 am (4 years ago)
NBA referee Tim Donaghy is under investigation by the FBI over allegations that he placed bets on basketball games in recent seasons.

Furthermore, it is alleged that he refereed one of the games he may have bet on.

Sources in law enforcement said that the wagers in question came to thousands of dollars and games are now being closely examined to determine whether Donaghy did anything to influence the outcome when he was officiating.

The FBI is also investigating whether the referee has connections in organized crime. In any case, it is unlikely that he acted alone and a spate of arrests are likely in the coming weeks.

The FBI probe, which was launched quite recently, had been kept under wraps until to story broke in the New York Times on Friday.

“As we previously stated, we have been cooperating with the FBI in their investigation of allegations that a single NBA referee bet on NBA games that he officiated,” commissioner David Stern said Friday.

He assured fans that he would do everything in his power to help with the investigation and bring justice to bear on any wrongdoing that had been committed.

The allegations, if proven to be true, are likely to do serious damage to the reputation of the NBA.
